annual religious ceremony that occurs in Tenmangu where worshippers come to exchange their wooden bullfinch birds

Holding period

2023.01.25

Replace “Ewaso” (false) with “Makoto” (true) for good luck.

Since ancient times, the Japanese bullfinch has been associated with the god Tenjin. The “Esaokae Shinto ritual” is an event to replace the carved wooden Japanese bullfinch given last year with a new one on the first Tenjin holiday of the year, January 25, in order to invite good luck by replacing the lie that was told unknowingly with the truth. In the Edo period (1603-1867), people would replace the wooden bullfinch that had been offered on the altar with a new one while saying, “Let’s replace it, let’s replace it.

At Yushima Tenjin Shrine, people receive “wooden Japanese bullfinch” amulets (large: 700 yen, small: 500 yen), which are made in the shape of a Japanese bullfinch and are meant to turn bad luck into good luck. On the day of the Shinto ritual, visitors put last year’s wooden Japanese bullfinch in a box and receive a new one. A “Decorative Japanese bullfinch ema” with a wooden bullfinch on it is also awarded.
Please note that “Kiurakyo” cannot be reserved, reserved, or mailed.
