Burning New Year’s decorations and good luck charms to pray for good health.

Tondoyaki” is a traditional event in which pine decorations, sacred ropes, and good luck charms from the previous year are brought to shrines and burned to send off the god of the year. It is said that if you eat rice cakes roasted over the fire, you will live a year with good health and good fortune.
At the Torigoe Shrine’s Tondo Yaki festival, after the priest ignites the flint stones, the fire burns vigorously, and children surround the area, pounding the ground with green bamboo in their hands while calling out “Dondo, Dondo, Dondo”. Afterwards, bamboos with rice cakes tied to them are distributed. Participants then place the rice cakes over a bonfire to roast them, praying for good health and good fortune.
