Masterpieces of Chishakuin Temple, Kyoto

Holding period

2022.11.30 〜 2023.01.22

Exhibiting temple treasures from Chishakuin, a famous temple in Higashiyama, Kyoto

This exhibition features temple treasures from the Chishakuin collection. The must-see works are a group of gold and blue wall paintings by Hasegawa Tohaku, a Momoyama period master along with Kano Eitoku, painted at Shounzenji Temple, the family temple of Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s son, Tsurumatsu. This is the first time that Hasegawa Kyuzo’s “Cherry Blossoms” and Hasegawa Tohaku’s “Maples” and “Autumn Plants on Pine Trees,” both national treasures, will be exhibited together.

Other highlights of the exhibition include “The Vajra Sutra,” a national treasure and representative work by Zhang Jizhi, a calligrapher from the Southern Song period of China, as well as “The Peacock King” and “The Doji Sutra Mandala,” both designated important cultural properties, and other works that cannot be overlooked in the history of Buddhist painting.
