Holding period

2022.12.09 〜 2022.12.10

Nerima’s famous rag market, which has continued since the Edo period

Held at Honritsuji Temple in Nerima. This is a traditional event that has continued since the Edo period and is held in conjunction with the “Okaeshiki” ceremony held on the anniversary of the death of the founder of Nichiren Shoshu. A market is set up in front of the temple gate and many stalls are set up.

In the early Edo period when Seki’s rag market began, farm equipment and New Year’s goods were sold and purchased by nearby farmers. In the Meiji period (1868-1912), old clothes and rags began to be sold, and the market became known as a “rag market.
Currently, there are stalls of various genres, including antiques, used books, toys, and food.

The Manto-gyo (parade of lanterns) held on the evening of the second day is a must-see. People dressed in happi coats and carrying coats, bells, and drums parade around manto lanterns decorated with flowers along a 1-km route from the south exit of Musanoseki Station to Hondachiji Temple.
