150 Years of Railroads and Art

Holding period

2022.10.08 〜 2023.01.09

150 masterpieces of modern and contemporary railroad paintings and other masterpieces

This year marks the 150th anniversary of Japan’s railroad system, which began service between Shimbashi and Yokohama in 1872. And the word “art” was first coined in the same year of 1872.

The exhibition will reveal the relationship between railroads and art by reading 150 years of aspects of railroad history, art history, politics, society, wars, customs, and other aspects of the two. The exhibition will feature approximately 150 works of art, including masterpieces of railroad-themed “railroad art,” collected from about 40 locations throughout Japan.

Of special note is the collection of masterpieces of modern and contemporary railroad painting. There are many interesting works, including a painting scroll representing a model of a steam locomotive presented by the United States in 1854 and a train headmark designed by contemporary artist Katsuhiko Hibino in 2021. The exhibition will also feature works renowned in the history of art, such as “Yokohama Coastal Railway Steam Car,” a masterpiece by Hiroshige Utagawa III, who created many railroad nishikie (brocade pictures).
