Goro Soga no Yoshiwoya: The Birth of Comedy

Holding period

2022.08.01 〜 2022.11.23

Tracing the life and achievements of the “King of Comedy,” Goro Soga.

Goro Soganoya (1877-1948), together with his colleague Juro, a Kabuki actor, launched the Soganoya Juro and Goro troupe in 1904 at the Naniwaza Theater in Dotonbori, Tokyo, under the name of “Kaikyogeki” (comedy troupe), which triggered a boom of “comedy troupes” in late Meiji period Japan. Although his works and performances, known as Goro-geki, have been succeeded by the current Shochiku Shinkigeki lineage of humanistic comedy, few people know his name today. This exhibition traces the life and accomplishments of the former “king of comedy,” Goro Sogauke Goro, using artifacts from the collection of the National Theatre of Japan, while providing an overview of the popularity and prestige of Gorogeki, which was so great that merchants in prewar Tokyo-Osaka would say, “Shall we go to Kabuki or Gorogeki?
