Hozuki Market at Sensoji Temple, a summer tradition in Asakusa

The origin of the hozuki market held at Sensoji Temple is said to date back to around 1764-72. At that time, there was a folk belief that if adults drank a whole hozuki fruit with water, it would cure a chronic illness that could not be cured, and children would get rid of a stomachache caused by insects thought to be in their stomachs.
On the temple grounds, “yellow cards” or “thunder banners,” which are prayer cards with yellow hanging paper, will be awarded only during these two days. In addition to hozukis, wind chimes will also be available for sale, which will ring with the cool sound of the wind. It is said that if you visit Asakusa Kannon on one of these two days, you will receive the same benefits as if you had visited the temple for 46,000 days, thus the Hozuki Market is also known as the “46,000 Days”.
