Akasaka Ishingo Main Store

Founded in 1899 (Meiji 32)

A long-established Chinese restaurant visited frequently by historical figures and leaders in politics and business.

Known as a “top of the top” Chinese restaurant in Akasaka. Because of its location, many politicians and important figures visit. It is said that Zhou Enlai, Chiang Kai-shek, and Lu Xun also came in the early days.

Although it has an elegant and classic atmosphere, there are also relatively affordable menu items. It is widely used for birthdays, anniversaries, ceremonies, and family gatherings.

The most famous dish is braised whole shark fin. Its size—often surprising—its unique texture, and its deep flavor attract many repeat visitors. The steamed buns such as meat buns and sweet red bean buns are also popular, and are sold at department stores.

In addition to the Akasaka main store, there are locations in Ginza and Ginza Annex. All offer top-class dishes with a spirit of hospitality. Many families visit across three generations, and it continues to be loved by all ages.

History

Founded in 1899 (Meiji 32). The founder, Zheng Yusheng, came from Ningbo (a port south of Shanghai) around Meiji 20 and worked at a wool fabric shop in Yokohama. When foreign settlement became allowed inland, he opened a restaurant in Kanda for Chinese students. The restaurant name was inspired by the reform movement led by Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao. Later, the business expanded to Ginza and Akasaka.
