Ishii Roasted Bean Shop

Established in 1887 (Meiji 20)

Authentic roasted beans with rich flavor that you can’t stop eating once you start

A roasted bean shop founded in 1887 (Meiji 20), located near the Nishikata intersection on Hakusan Street. Currently run by the fifth-generation owners, Mr. and Mrs. Yuki Ishii, together with the fourth-generation former owners.Upon entering, the first thing that catches your eye is the large roasting machine called a “furi-ami.” Peanuts and soybeans are roasted in the shop, so visiting during roasting lets you enjoy a fragrant aroma. They are particular about adjusting roasting times based on the type of beans, the day’s weather, and humidity. Peanuts are roasted for 15–20 minutes, and soybeans are soaked overnight and then roasted for about 1 hour 30 minutes. This is a tradition passed down from the founder and is an essential process to bring out the beans’ natural flavor.

The most popular product is peanuts made using the simple method that has not changed since the shop was founded.Other variations include curry-coated broad beans, wasabi-flavored beans, and butter-flavored bean snacks—about 30 flavors in total, all offered at reasonable prices. They are recommended both as snacks with drinks and as treats for children.
