Tokyo National Museum “New Year’s Celebration at the Museum

The Tokyo National Museum will open its doors on January 2 (Mon., holiday), 2023, and will hold its annual New Year’s event, “Hatsumorette at the Museum. This event will be held for the 20th year in 2023, and has been well received every year.
In celebration of the coming of the New Year, visitors can view a variety of auspicious works and masterpieces in the Honkan and Toyokan galleries, including a special feature on works based on the Chinese zodiac and the National Treasure “Byeongpu of Matsurin” by Hasegawa Tohaku (on exhibit from January 2 (Mon., holiday) to January 15 (Sun.), 2011).
In addition, the museum will hold a New Year’s-only project, including an ikebana exhibit to get you in the mood for the New Year. Please come to the museum to start the new year.

Special Feature: New Year’s Celebration at the Museum: Year of the Rabbit and the Year of the Rabbit

The Chinese zodiac sign for 2023 is 癸卯 (癸卯), the year of the rabbit. Rabbits have a long relationship with humans, and have spent many years together as pets and hunting subjects. Rabbits have also been represented in literature and art, enriching people’s lives.
This special feature looks at the fascination of rabbits as represented in East Asian figurative art from five perspectives: “Usagi ni Kaku Usagi,” “Moon Rabbit,” “Rabbit on the Wave,” “Where is the Rabbit,” and “Rabbit and People.
