Beautiful Lacquer: Japanese and Korean Lacquer Crafts

Holding period

2023.04.13 〜 2023.06.18

The Charm of Japanese and Korean Lacquer Crafts

Lacquer crafts from Japan and Korea are on display. Many Japanese lacquer crafts are decorated with “lacquer paintings,” a favorite of Yanagi Muneyoshi. Among them, bowls such as Hidehira bowls, which originated in the Nanbu region centered in Iwate Prefecture, are highly regarded as being very superior. A wide range of other types of lacquerware will also be on display, including Ryukyu lacquerware and items used for celebratory occasions by the general public.

In Korean lacquer crafts, however, boxes decorated with mother-of-pearl inlays (raden), which are inlaid with patterns of flowers and birds, are particularly striking. When light shines on the flowers and birds, they radiate a sublime radiance.

In addition, works by craft artists such as Tatsuaki Kuroda and Taro Maruyama will also be on display to convey the appeal of the lacquer crafts in the museum’s collection.
