Focus on “Women’s Clothing” that Changes with the World

As the expression “fashion is a mirror of the times” suggests, clothing is closely related to the changing times. The drastic social changes of the Showa period were no exception, and had a major impact on women’s clothing in particular, from Japanese-style to Western-style clothing and from home sewing to ready-to-wear clothing.

When the Sino-Japanese War broke out, the government’s campaign to mobilize the national psyche and the shortage of supplies led to restrictions on clothing as well. Even after the war ended, women could not afford to enjoy dressing up due to the severe shortage of goods. However, as the postwar period brought a new culture and improved the status of women during the Occupation and economic controls were lifted, women gradually began to choose more functional clothing, and around 1955, the percentage of women wearing Japanese and Western-style clothing reversed in urban areas.

This exhibition introduces women’s clothing that changed along with the changing times of the Showa era.
