Buy a lucky rake and pray for good luck!

Temples that have Kobo-Daishi as their principal deity hold a temple fair on the 21st of every month, named after March 21, the anniversary of Kobo-Daishi’s death. Among them, the last day of the year is called “Nome no Daishi” (the last day of the year). At Nishiarai Daishi, too, stalls selling everything from lucky charms such as rakes and daruma dolls to street food stalls are lined up to pray for prosperous business.

The rake is a lucky charm derived from the rake, a tool used to “rake” up fallen leaves, and has been sold at the end of the year since the Edo period (1603-1868) as a way to “stir up luck” and “stir up gold and silver” when displayed by merchants. Please try to stir up your luck before the New Year. The rake market will have 12~13 stalls in the corner in front of the main hall from 9~21 p.m. Other stalls will have about 100 stalls from 9~16 p.m. In 2022, the number of stalls other than rake shops will be reduced to prevent the spread of new coronavirus infection.
