dance performance held in April by geisha and maiko in Kyoto’s Gion district

Holding period

2023.05.21 〜 2023.05.23

A rare once-a-year opportunity to see the willow world

The Shinbashi Hanayagikai (geisha world) emerged at the end of the Edo period. Shinbashi became an artistic center, with the goal of the town being to train the best in the art. Following the example of geisha song and dance parlors in Kyoto and Osaka, the Shinbashi Enbujo was built in 1925 as a stage for the Shinbashi geisha to perform their fine performances. Its history began with the first performance of the Shinbashi geisha, “Azuma Todori,” which was the first performance of its kind in the city.

Usually, the Hanayagi-kai is not open to first-time visitors, but once a year, the 98th Azuma Odori is a rare opportunity for anyone to enjoy sake snacks and geisha dancing at a ryotei restaurant. This year, for the first time, Jusuke Hanayagi V, the young head of the Hanayagi school, will be in charge of overall direction and composition. The opening act, entitled “Toki Meguru Shinbashi,” opens with two dances with different atmospheres, choreographed by Nishikawa Sakon and Onoe Kikunojo, the heads of the two Hanayagi schools. After a short intermission, the second act featured a performance choreographed by Jusuke Hanayagi, which moved at a brisk tempo through spring, summer, autumn, winter, and the New Year. The audience enjoyed the traditional Hanayagi style of dance with its flamboyant beauty. The performance continued into the darkening of the stage for the finale, which was unparalleled in the Azuma Odori style.

During the interval, visitors can enjoy sake snacks and sake from Tokyo’s leading ryotei restaurants. There will also be original souvenir shops and ryotei performances. Geishas and ryotei become one, and the Shimbashi Enbujo becomes a large ryotei (Japanese-style restaurant) at the Azuma Todori. The beautiful art and style of Japan will gather here.
