Holding period

2022.10.19 〜 2022.10.20

In addition to Tokyo’s famous “betarazuke” (pickles), the festival is crowded with 500 stalls

The “Bettara-ichi” is a traditional event that has continued since the Edo period (1603-1868), and is considered to be one of the most popular autumnal events in Nihonbashi. Merchant families in the Nihonbashi area had a custom of worshipping Ebisu-sama, one of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, and usually offered abacuses and other tools used in their business.

The origin of the Bettara Market dates back to around the middle of the Edo period (1603-1867), when an event called “Ebisu-ko” was held every year on October 20 to make offerings at the gate of the Baotan Ebisu Shrine, and the day before the Ebisu-ko, fish and vegetables, including betara zukemono, as well as fish and vegetables, and kamidana, etc. were sold.

Bettara is a specialty of Tokyo, and is made by pickling daikon radish that has been pre-pickled with salt, then marinated in rice malt and sugar. The name “betara” comes from the fact that the amazake malt on the surface is sticky to the touch.

The Betara Market is centered around the Baoda Ebisu Shrine and is very crowded with about 30 stalls selling betara-zuke and about 500 stalls selling shichimi (seven spice) togarashi (red pepper), amezaiku (candy craft), and other items. At night, a large paper lantern in front of the Ebisu Shrine and more than 1,500 lanterns around the area are lit, creating an atmosphere of a night festival.
