Part 3 of the exhibition, “Masterpieces from the Museum Collection,” commemorating the reopening of the Tokyo Pavilion, features approximately 70 works selected from the two museums’ collections of oriental art. The exhibition includes two National Treasures and ten Important Cultural Properties, including a gorgeous incense box from the Momoyama to Edo periods, “Incense Box with Dragonfly and Drooping Cherry Blossoms in Maki-e Lacquer,” from the Southern Song dynasty (13th century) (National Treasure), and “Standing Maitreya Buddha” from the Northern Wei dynasty (498), China (Important Cultural Property). Chinese paintings, which have continued to pursue ways to express the invisible “chi” (energy), and tea ceremony utensils and incense implements that convey the spirit of sukiya, or the heart of sukiya, or the spirit of sukiya, are all on display.
