Holding period

2022.09.11 〜 2022.09.21

A festival that takes place over 11 days of “slumbering”.

The Dara Dara Festival is held every year in early September over a period of 10 days, and is said to be the longest festival in Japan because it lasts for 11 days. Shiba Daijingu Shrine was once known as the “Ise Shrine of Kanto,” and in the Edo period (1603-1867), the festival attracted worshippers from all over the country, making the duration of the festival longer than usual. It is said that the festival was so long that the Edo people named it “Dara-Dara-Matsuri,” which means “the festival of laziness. Every other year, more than a dozen portable shrines from each town participate in a joint procession, and the head mikoshi (portable shrine) makes a parade through the Ujiko area on an irregular basis.
The middle days of the festival, from the 14th to the 16th, are the most exciting. The festival’s specialty is the “ginger market. It started when nearby farmers brought in ginger and actively sold it in the temple grounds and on the approach to the shrine. The approach to the temple is lined with stalls and visitors can enjoy the festive atmosphere of the festival.
