Miyamoto Unosuke Shoten

Founded in the first year of Bunkyū (1861)

A long-established maker of drums, mikoshi, and festival equipment showcasing master craftsmanship

We offer many festival-related products, including drums, mikoshi, flutes, and sacred items.Drum making begins with sourcing the finest materials.Trees over 100 years old are cut and shaped into the basic body called arado, then dried carefully for 3 to 5 years. After shaving and shaping, the skin is attached and the sound is adjusted using long-cultivated craftsmanship, creating drums with Miyamoto’s unique deep tone.

The company has also produced many mikoshi, including the main mikoshi of Asakusa Shrine.Mikoshi production involves around 20 types of specialists—such as the lead mikoshi master, woodworkers, lacquer craftsmen, and metal ornament artisans—creating each piece with great care down to the smallest detail.

While preserving tradition, we actively adopt new techniques and materials to meet the needs of modern festivals and customers. In March 2022, we launched the sustainable product “Drums That Create Forests,” combining traditional craftsmanship with thinned wood to support harmony with nature.
We also operate the school “HIBIKUS,” where students can take drum lessons from top-class instructors.Lessons are held twice a month for 120 minutes each, allowing beginners to advanced players to enjoy the exhilaration of playing Japanese drums.

We also operate the “Taiko Museum,” which collects, preserves, and exhibits drums and reference materials from around the world (located in Nishi-Asakusa, Taito-ku, Tokyo; open 10:00–17:00; 500 yen for adults, 150 yen for children; closed Monday and Tuesday). It is a drum museum displaying about 800 drums from Japan and regions across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas.

History

The company was founded as a drum shop in Tsuchiura, Ibaraki, in 1861.In the Meiji era, the shop moved to Asakusa, where it continues to operate today. We manufacture drums for shrines, temples, folk performing arts, gagaku, noh, kabuki, and others throughout Japan. At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, we provided a set of giant 8-meter-tall flame drums that energized the opening ceremony.
