Morihan Nori Shop

Founded in Meiji 34 (1901)

The birthplace of roasted nori sold in tea canisters, where you can enjoy the highest-quality nori.

A roasted nori specialty shop located in Omori, Tokyo, the birthplace of nori farming. After nori farming ended in Omori in the 1950s, they tried nori from all over Japan and arrived at nori from Saga/Ariake Sea, whose fishing grounds and environment resembled Omori, preserving the traditional flavor.Every December, they place frozen nets (nets seeded with nori spores and stored in a freezer after the sprouts slightly grow) into the sea and focus on purchasing only the first harvest, known as “hatsuzumi nori.”Nets placed during the cold season keep seawater temperature stable and gradually lower, which is ideal for nori growth and enhances its flavor.Hatsuzumi nori is characterized by its deep black color, light crisp texture, rich taste, and excellent aroma. This is one of the reasons Morihan Nori Shop’s roasted nori continues to be loved today. The “Special Nori Chazuke,” packed with roasted nori overflowing from a rice bowl along with arare crackers and matcha, is so popular that production can’t keep up, often leading to sold-out periods.

History

In 1884, the 5th head of the Moriya family, Hansuke Moriya, opened “Morihan Main Store” in Iriarai Village (around present-day Heiwajima) and engaged in wholesale nori sales.Later, as part of business expansion, the eldest daughter Mio and her husband opened the retail store “Morihan Nori Shop” in front of Omori Station.

They are said to be the first to sell roasted nori—dried nori grilled over a hibachi—in tea canisters. In Omori’s entertainment district, the nori from Morihan became known as “a greatly appreciated gift to bring.”
