The Ueno–Okachimachi area changed from a samurai town in the Edo period to a merchant town after the Meiji Restoration.Ueno Fugetsudo has continued selling Western-style sweets in this area.Among them, the classic choice for gifts and souvenirs is the “Gaufre.”It is a Western-style sweet featuring a soft sweetness, with cream sandwiched between wafers.It was created in Showa 4 (1929) by the Ueno Fugetsudo family.

Ueno Fugetsudo also offers “Gaufre Crush Cookies,” available in four flavors, and “Cream Sandwich” cookies known for their rich, toasted aroma,as well as “Tokyo Castella,” carefully baked one by one by craftsmen in special copper molds using the traditional “six-sided baking” method.The lineup is filled with irresistible treats for lovers of Western sweets.

History

In Enkyo 4 (1747), the first-generation Kiemon Osumi moved from Osaka to Edo,and opened “Osakaya” in Kyobashi Suzuki-cho, marking the beginning of Ueno Fugetsudo.The shift toward Western-style confectionery began in Meiji 5 (1872),and in Meiji 38 (1905), the third son, Shozaburo, established “Ueno Fugetsudo” in Ueno Hirokoji.After overcoming events such as the Great Kanto Earthquake and world wars,the desire to “make delicious sweets” and the techniques of confectionery making are still being passed down today.

Inside the fragrantly baked cookies is a richly flavored cream.There are two types: cream with raisins soaked in rum, and cream with cranberries soaked in liqueur, offering a refreshing sweet-and-tart taste.
