Sake & Tea

combined off-license and pub (licence)(kakuuchi)

Japanese rice wine

The term “kaku-uchi” refers to drinking sake in a liquor storefront, drinking standing up in a corner of a liquor store, or drinking standing up in a liquor store itself. There are various theories as to the origin of the term “kaku-uchi,” but the most popular theory is that people drank sake directly from the corner of a square. In the past, liquor stores sold sake by the square, and people began to drink sake they bought on the spot from the square, hence the name kaku-uchi. The birthplace of the kaku-uchi is believed to be Kitakyushu. It is said that the kaku-uchi culture was born when late-night workers in the Kitakyushu industrial area began drinking at liquor stores that were open from morning.
