Stick the needle into the tofu and pray for the safety and progress of your needlework.
Hari Kuyo” is an event to make offerings to needles that have broken or rusted during sewing. It is one of the customs held nationwide, centering on the Awashima Shrine in Wakayama Prefecture and the halls dedicated to the deity Awashima. Awashima-do is also located in the precincts of Sensoji Temple, and it is said that needle offering events were also held at Sensoji Temple due to the influence of “Awashima Ganjin” who preached the merits of Awashima Myojin in the Edo period.
On the day of the event, people engaged in needlework stick needles into the tofu set up in the precincts of Awashima-do to pray for the safety and progress of their needlework, and also to make offerings of needles and offer prayers of thanksgiving. The annual Hari Kuyo event is held during the season when the plum blossoms are in full bloom, so after the event, why not admire the plum blossoms in the precincts of the temple?
