Scent bag making workshop 2022

Holding period

2022.09.18 〜 2022.09.19

You can make three scent bags with your favorite concoction!

This event is hosted by one of Japan’s largest “Butsudan & Sacrificial Altar Street” near Shimotani Shrine, where 50 stores selling butsudan (Buddhist altars), butsugu (Buddhist ritual utensils), shingu (Shinto ritual utensils), and other ritual utensils line the street. After listening to an instructor explain about incense, participants choose and mix their own ingredients to create three types of incense, each one unique to them. Incense making may seem simple, but it is actually a very deep process, and even if the ingredients are mixed in the same way, the fragrance will be completely different for each person.
The incense made can be taken home in a drawstring bag. You can use it as a scent bag, put it in a chest of drawers to protect your clothes from insects, display it in your room, or put it in an envelope to use as bunka (writing incense). The time you spend facing yourself and creating invisible scents is precious. Try your hand at making your own one-of-a-kind incense.
