Yagenbori Shin-Nakamise Main Store

Founded in Kan’ei 2 (1625)

Shichimi chili pepper loved by Tokugawa Iemitsu, adjustable to your preferred spiciness

A long-established store with about 400 years of history since the Edo period, specializing in shichimi chili for 10 generations. By inheriting traditional methods that preserve spiciness and aroma, it continues to maintain its traditional taste.Yagenbori’s shichimi chili includes chili pepper, roasted chili, poppy seeds, hemp seeds, powdered Japanese pepper, black sesame, and dried citrus peel. For Edo residents who love spicy food, blending raw and roasted chili enhances the sharp spiciness.Another reason Yagenbori is loved is that they offer custom blending according to customers’ preferences. From the seven seasonings displayed in the store, staff ask about your spiciness and aroma preferences, adjusting the blend on the spot by adding more roasted chili or less powdered pepper. You can order a “My Shichimi Chili” perfectly suited to your taste, which is highly praised.

History

Founded in Kan’ei 2 (1625) at Yagenbori in Ryogoku, Edo (now Higashi-Nihonbashi 1-chome).The first owner, Tokuemon, took inspiration from herbal medicine, created shichimi chili, and began selling it.The moderate spiciness and aroma captivated Edo residents, and its popularity spread nationwide.Yagenbori’s logo includes the character “Toku,” because Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third shogun, loved their shichimi chili and gave the “Toku” character from the Tokugawa name.
