place of executionYoshida Shoin era (1624.2.30-1644.12.16)old name of Tokyo

Denmacho Prison House, which often appears in period dramas, was an Edo penal colony where 300 to 400 prisoners were held, and executions were also carried out here. A part of it is now Jushikoen (designated as a cultural property by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government). In 1857, Yoshida Shoin was executed here during the Great Ansei Incarceration, and there is a monument in Jushi Koen that reads “Shoin Sensei’s death”. In Jushi Park, there is the “Toki no Kane (bell of time)” that rings when an execution is carried out, and in the Daianrakuji Temple next to the park, there is a monument that reads “Site of Edo Denmacho Execution Site.
