Edoya

Founded in Kyōhō 3 (1718)

A comprehensive specialty shop for brushes and brooms located along the old highway

A shop building influenced by Art Deco, standing along the former Nikko Highway in Nihonbashi. It is a Taishō-era structure registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property.特The signboard lettering “Edoya” on the distinctive white artificial-stone exterior shows that each sweeping stroke of the kanji subtly resembles the tip of a brush.Yes—this is a specialty shop for brushes and brooms that has continued since the Edo period. The techniques once used to craft brushes for finishing fusuma and shoji in Edo Castle have expanded into a wide variety of brushes, and continue to be passed down today.

Opening the sliding door that makes a pleasant clicking sound reveals a thoroughly swept interior lined with brushes and brooms from large to small.Toothbrushes, shoe brushes, clothing brushes, hairbrushes, makeup brushes, and kitchen items such as dusters and brooms. It makes you realize that although we rarely think about it, brushes and brooms play a major role in our everyday lives.

Edoya’s products are devoted to natural materials.Craftsmen choose the appropriate animal hair and plant it at the ideal length and density into natural wooden handles that fit gently in the hand. Each of the countless brush types is finished by a specialist craftsman.

The comfort in use and performance perfectly suited to purpose have earned loyal users, and over many years the brushes have evolved in response to their feedback and requests. It is no surprise that professionals in shoe care, hair styling, and cleaning frequently request and repurchase them. They also develop new products to suit new materials and uses when customers consult them.

A mother shopping for her child’s hairbrush, a man searching for a shoe brush, and a local man arriving by bicycle to buy a replacement toothbrush. The customers who come are truly diverse.

What you obtain at Edoya is surely not just a tool.It is the rich mindset of caring for possessions and enjoying maintaining one’s surroundings.

History

During the era of Tokugawa Ietsugu, the 7th shogun, the first Rihei was appointed as an official brush maker to the shogunate.Later, in Kyōhō 3 (1718) under the 8th shogun Yoshimune, the shop name “Edoya” was granted and the business opened as a specialist in Edo brushes, including bookbinding brushes, dyeing brushes, face-powder brushes, painting brushes, doll brushes, lacquer brushes, and woodblock brushes. From the Meiji era onward, they began producing Western-style brushes such as deck brushes, clothing brushes, and hairbrushes, and to this day they supply a wide variety of brush products to both businesses and individuals.
