Toranomon Choujiya

Established in Kansei 10 (1798)

Proposing a personal approach to everyday kimono wear

Choujiya is located in a clean, modern Japanese-style space within Toranomon Hills Business Tower, directly connected to Toranomon Hills Station.Toranomon is known as an office district with people in suits, but it is actually a historic area with many long-established shops, including Choujiya.Originally in Nihonbashi, since Meiji 35 (1902) Choujiya has been located here, growing together with the neighborhood.

The store has been operating here long before this building existed, and customers enter through a separate street-facing entrance, not through the building’s main entrance. The store offers high-quality accessories for both Western and Japanese clothing, original tsumugi fabrics and obi bearing the shop’s name, and story-rich items like a Tsubo-ore coat linked to Yoko Ono.In the traditional tatami seating area, the owner sits and spreads out fabrics while consulting on outfits, giving a sense of classic Japanese commerce.

Enjoying kimono means different things to different people. Choujiya offers a wide range of options, from custom-made orders based on fabric and patterns to advice on wearing what you already own, putting the customer at the center.Even those unfamiliar with kimono can feel at ease.

For beginners who are interested but unsure where to start or want to try wearing kimono, the monthly “Outlet & Vintage Market” selling affordable second-hand kimono or the shop’s unique rental system is convenient. They also provide advice on how to make use of the kimono you already own.For those wanting to learn to dress themselves, kimono classes are available at your own pace.Photo plans are also offered for those who want to take commemorative pictures at different life stages.

Thanks to its long history and deep expertise, the shop can guide each person in a flexible and personalized way on how to enjoy kimono.

“Kimono is a sustainable garment that can be returned to a bolt of fabric. Even if your body changes, it can be resized, and stains can be moved to less visible areas or repurposed into obi or coats.Even old stains may be removed with modern stain removers, so we encourage you to consult with us freely.”
