The World of Embroidered Paintings: The Beauty of Japan in the Meiji and Taisho Periods

Holding period

2022.08.24 〜 2022.09.12

Embroidered Paintings, the best of Japanese embroidery, on display.

Embroidered paintings are products made by embroiderers using a needle and thread to sew paintings based on drafts drawn by Japanese painters into wall hangings, screens, and other products. During the Meiji and Taisho periods, embroidered paintings were produced in large numbers as representative Japanese arts and crafts. Craftsmen stitched each stitch with precision and repeated the process, freely drawing curves and perfecting the finished product. At the time, many of these embroideries were exported as interior decorations to be displayed in residences overseas and were also exhibited at world expositions, and many of them have remained in foreign countries. This exhibition features valuable embroidered paintings in Japan, as well as velvet yuzen and their preparatory drawings. One of the must-see works, “Shishi-zu” (Lion), is based on a preparatory sketch of “Shishi-zu” by Japanese painter Shoto Kamisaka.
*Includes works not from the Meiji and Taisho periods and works of unknown date of production.
