Rejoice in meeting Buddha on the occasion of his birthday
The Hana-Matsuri (Flower Festival) is held on April 8, the birthday of Lord Buddha, to celebrate the joy of meeting the Buddha. Hana Matsuri is held at temples throughout Japan regardless of religious denomination, but the Tsukiji Honganji Temple’s Hana Matsuri is the largest of its kind in Tokyo.
This year’s “Hana-Matsuri” at Tsukiji Honganji will begin with a flower offering ceremony in the main hall, performed by Iemoto Sasaoka of the Misei-ryu school, followed by the “Shobutsu-kai”, a Buddhist memorial service to celebrate the birth of the Buddha.
Inside the main hall, there is a gorgeous flower hall where the birth Buddha (Shakyamuni) is enshrined, and sweet tea is poured to celebrate the event. The “Children’s Procession,” in which many children, marching bands from religious schools, and Buddhist priests parade through the streets of Tsukiji, is also a must-see.
In addition, the Embassy of India, the birthplace of Buddhism, and the Embassy of Sri Lanka, a quasi-national Buddhist organization, will each set up special booths in the precincts of the temple to promote international exchange, performing classical dance and music. In addition, there will be various experience corners for children, and famous stores in Tsukiji will set up store in the precincts of the temple, making this a lively event that anyone can enjoy.
