Kaga Yuzen(Kaga Yuzen/kagayuzen)

Japanese clothesclothing

Yuzen dyeing is produced in Kaga (present-day Ishikawa Prefecture). The traditions of “ume-zome” (plain dyeing) and Kaga okunizome, characterized by colored pictures and colored patterns, were originally established in Kaga by Miyazaki Yuzenzai, the founder of Kyoto yuzen, who stayed in Kaga in the mid-Edo period, and added innovative designs and techniques. Dyeing techniques include hand-painting and stencil dyeing. Characteristics include the use of “Kaga Gosai” colors (Enji, Indigo, Ochre, Grass, and Ancient Purple), the expression of leaves with insect holes, and the technique of blurring from the outside to the inside. The motifs of nature and classics, such as flowers, birds, wind, and the moon, are often pictorial in expression, but goldwork and embroidery are not applied. Despite being yuzen, it has the calm atmosphere favored by samurai families.
