It does not use animal products such as meat, fish, and eggs, and instead focuses on vegetables, grains, and seaweed. Soy products such as tofu and natto (fermented soybeans) are used as a source of protein. It is served to monks engaged in Buddhist training, and is also commonly eaten at funerals and Buddhist memorial services.
