rolled sushi with rice and other ingredients(Teppoumaki/Kanpyomaki)

vinegared rice rolled in nori (laver)

A thin nori roll with a core of sweet and spicy kanpyo (dried gourd). It is often called simply “kanpyoumaki. It is said that the name “kanpyo-maki” comes from its resemblance to the barrel of a gun, the cylindrical part of a gun. There is another local dish of the same name, “Teppo-maki” in Futtsu City, Chiba Prefecture, but this is a thick roll with bonito flakes seasoned with soy sauce instead of kanpyo (dried gourd). The former uses sushi rice, while the latter uses regular rice. It is similar to okaka rice balls, which have been popular as a portable food for fishermen.
