Reusing taiko drum materials. Joint production of stools with a French designer / Unosuke Miyamoto Shoten

Unokichi Miyamoto Shoten, which has been manufacturing and selling taiko drums, portable shrines, and ritual implements since its establishment in 1861, has taken on the challenge of upcycling for the first time in its 160-year history. The company has launched “The Curve” project to manufacture all kinds of products by utilizing unwanted drum bodies that do not meet manufacturing standards. As the first step of the project, a stool was created in collaboration with French product designer Pierre Charlier. The curved surface finished with a plane is beautiful and smooth to the touch, and is a gem that allows visitors to appreciate the craftsmanship that the store has preserved and maintained.

Unokichi Miyamoto Shoten will launch the “Forest-Creating Taiko Project” in March 2022 in order to coexist in harmony with nature. The Curve” is a part of this project, and the company plans to continue to develop products in collaboration with artists across industries. Expectations are high for sustainable manufacturing that breathes new life into unnecessary drums.
