A cold confection consisting of red peas boiled in salted water, diced agar, apricots, mandarin oranges, bananas, cherries, gyuuhi, etc., and topped with molasses. The one with azuki bean paste on top is called “anmitsu,” the one with ice cream is called “cream mitsumame,” and the one with just beans and agar is called “mamikan. The original form of mitsumame was a snack for children sold at food stalls in the late Edo period. In the Meiji era (1868-1912), mitsumame with agar, fruit, and gyuuhi (gyuhi) appeared at confectionery stores in Asakusa, as it does today.
