A group of five male dolls in a set of ten or more dolls. These dolls are modeled after the Hayashikata of the Noh play, and play the role of playing music in dances and dances at court events. Generally, children’s faces are used for the dolls. It is said that the dolls were invented as hina dolls in the late Edo period. The order of the instruments is similar to that of the musical accompaniment in Noh plays: from the right, the chorus, flute, kotsuzumi (small hand drum), ootsuzumi (large hand drum), and taiko (drums). The instruments are arranged in order of decreasing pitch.
