Daiba Park (Odaiba, Tokyo)(Daiba Park)

fortNational Historic SiteJapan’s 100 greatest castles

Daiba” were artificial islands built by the shogunate during the Edo period in preparation for the arrival of foreign ships that strongly urged the opening of Japan to the outside world. Daiba Park was created by opening up the Third Daiba, a nationally designated historic site, and features the ruins of gun emplacements, camps, powder depots, and kamado. The Third and Sixth platforms were selected as “Shinagawa Platform” in 2017 as one of the 100 best castles in Japan. The Rainbow Bridge and Tokyo Tower can be seen from the park, and the contrast between the traces of history and modern architecture is also an enjoyable experience. Incidentally, the Sixth Daiba is off-limits to the public in order to preserve the many precious plants and other natural features that remain. (Image courtesy of Tokyo Port Terminal Co.)
