A term used to describe the exterior of a Japanese sword. The sword’s ornaments include the scabbard, which holds the blade, the hilt, which holds the stem (the part of the sword inserted into the hilt), and the tsuba, which is attached to the hilt to prevent the hand from slipping on the blade when the hilt is gripped. It is also called “tsukuri. There are a variety of shapes depending on the person who made the sword and the age of the sword. They were not made solely for ease of use, but also as an indication of the owner’s status, family background, and dignity.
