Tomesode” is a highly formal kimono worn by married women, and is a shortened version of furisode with long sleeves. Only the hem is decorated with gorgeous patterns. Among these, kimonos with a base color other than black are called “shiro-tomesode. At weddings and other celebratory occasions, it is appropriate attire for the guest of honor and those who are distantly related to the guest of honor. A kimono with five family crests dyed on the back, both outer sleeves, and both breasts is equivalent to a black tomesode. If three or one family crest is used, it can be worn like a visiting gown.
