Sweet potatoes cut into clappers, deep-fried in oil, and dipped in sugar. It is known as a local confectionery of Kochi Prefecture. It is also called sweet potato karinto. According to a legend, sweet potatoes were brought to Tosa from Satsuma by Gobei Koyagi, a samurai of the Tosa domain, in 1705, which is said to be the origin of imokenpi. In Kochi Prefecture, the word “kenpi” has long been used to refer to a confection made by baking wheat flour into a stick shape.
